A-ListerMartin Scorcese
The tireless Italian-American and New York-bred director/screenwriter/producer made TV history by directing the pilot for HBO’s dramatic series “Boardwalk Empire,” for which he is also an executive producer. The show, about corruption and the high life in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, is already being called the network’s next “Sopranos.” But without Scorsese, it likely would never have gotten off the ground. At almost 68 years old, Scorsese seems intent on making movies for life, and is currently producing biopics on Frank Sinatra and Theodore Roosevelt. Scorsese started his career at a young age. Attending the Film School at New York University he won many awards, including Producer’s Guild Award for best student film for It’s Not Just You Murray! After graduating, Scorsese remained at the University as a instructor in basic film technique and criticism, while beginning his career as director. Scorsese went on to produce such notable films as Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Gangs of New York among many more. Scorcese has directed 20 feature films and documentaries spanning four decades, which often take root in his Italian-American origin. The cinematic legend-in-his-own-time received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 67th Golden Globe Awards, an award that will sit on the Scorsese mantle alongside the 2007 Best Director Oscar for The Departed. Scorsese is also the founder of the World Cinema Foundation and president of The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to film preservation.
